From the 1st January 2007 onwards EirGrid administers the Powersave scheme, on behalf of the Commission for Regulation of Utilities. The aim of this scheme is to encourage large- and medium-sized customers to reduce their electricity demand on days when total system demand is close to available supply. In return, participating customers are made payments on the basis of kWh reductions achieved during a Powersave event. As such, a Powersave event may be called any business day of the year and for any time of day. The terms of participating in this are documented in the Powersave Rules. The Powersave Contract between the Supplier and the Customer is also contained in this document:

Meter Registration System Operator (MRSO) maintains the Powersave database, calculates payments due to customers for Powersave events and advises their respective Supplier.
